Plane Crash News Ahmedabad: On the afternoon of June 12, 2025, a terrible accident happened near Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, leaving the city in shock. An Air India flight, numbered AI171, was flying from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick Airport when it crashed just moments after taking off. The plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.

Sadly, the crash took place in a busy residential area called Meghani Nagar, close to the airport, causing a massive fire and thick black smoke that could be seen from far away. The plane hit a hostel building at BJ Medical College, where many students were present, adding to the tragedy. As stated by Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik, a single passenger in seat 11A managed to survive the Plane crash by leaping from the plane just before crash. 

This person, a 38-year-old British national named Ramesh Vishwaskumar Bucharvada, was taken to Civil Hospital in Asarwa for treatment. The crash is one of the worst aviation disasters in India since 1996, and the news has left local people heartbroken as they wait for more details about their loved ones. The plane was carrying 169 Indian passengers, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, making the tragedy felt across many countries.

Details of the Ahmedabad Plane Crash Incident

The Air India flight took off from Ahmedabad airport at around 1:38 PM on June 12, 2025, but within a minute, it faced serious trouble. The pilot sent a distress signal, called a “MAYDAY” call, to air traffic control, but after that, there was no further communication. 

The plane climbed only 625 feet before it fell to the ground, bursting into flames. The crash happened so quickly that rescue teams had to rush to the site to control the fire, which was made worse by the plane’s heavy fuel load. Firefighters, police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) worked hard to put out the flames and search for survivors. 

By late Thursday, the NDRF had recovered 81 bodies from the crash site, and the search was still going on. The plane’s black box, which includes the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, has not yet been found, but investigators are working hard to locate it. The crash also caused damage on the ground, with at least 24 people in the hostel building losing their lives. 

Five medical students, including four undergraduate students and one postgraduate resident, were among those killed when the plane hit the dining hall of the hostel. The airport was closed for some time, but limited flight operations have now started again.

Response to the Ahmedabad Flight Crash

As soon as the news of the crash spread, emergency teams, including fire engines and ambulances, reached the site to help. The government acted quickly, with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visiting the crash site to check on the situation. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah and the Civil Aviation Minister, asking them to provide all possible help to those affected. Modi is expected to visit Ahmedabad on June 13, 2025, to meet the families of the victims. The ahmedabad plan crash Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has started a formal investigation to find out what caused the crash, and a high-level team of experts has been formed to look into the matter. 

Teams from the United States and the United Kingdom, including experts from Boeing and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are coming to India to assist with the investigation. Air India has announced that the families of the victims will receive Rs 1 crore as compensation, and under the Montreal Convention treaty, they may get around Rs 1.5 crore more. The airline also shared a hotline number, 1800 5691 444, for people to get more information about the crash.

The crash in Meghani Nagar, a crowded residential area, has deeply affected the people of Ahmedabad. Many locals saw the plane flying very low before it crashed, and some shared videos showing the burning wreckage and thick smoke.

The hostel at BJ Medical College, where the plane fell, was home to many young students dreaming of becoming doctors. One woman told news agency ANI that her son was injured after jumping from the second floor of the hostel to escape the crash.
